Silver medal Accession of the Luxembourg dynasty to the Czech throne proof The medal was issued on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the coronation of the royal couple Elisabeth of Bohemia (of the Přemyslid dynasty) and John of Luxembourg. It commemorates the historical significance of the interconnection of the central and western Europe as well as the political bequest of the first Luxembourg on the Czech throne who married Elisabeth Přemyslid on 3 December 1310. 7 February 1310 is the coronation day of this royal couple.By this act, the Luxembourg dynasty acceded to the Czech throne and took over political and cultural legacy of the last Přemyslids, adding the European dimension to the Czech state and transforming it into a central European power – the commonwealth of the Czech crown. Under the reign of the Luxembourgs, Prague became the political centre of the medieval Holy Roman Empire and the most important cultural metropolis north of the Alps and east of the Rhine. The obverse side features portraits of the royal couple Elisabeth Přemyslid (standing slightly behind) and John of Luxembourg, who “protects“ his wife with his arm. Placement of John of Luxembourg in the forefront of the medal also symbolizes accession of the Luxembourgs to the Czech throne. The author of the portraits was inspired by Jan Parléř’s portraits from the St. Wenceslas’ triforium. The Czech and Luxembourg lions depicted on the reverse side are arranged in a similar way – the Luxembourg lion slightly covers the Czech one. On both sides a pointed arch vaults in the upper part of the medal – it is a typical feature of the period as well as a symbol of marriage and unity. The motif in the lower part of the medal comes from John of Luxembourg’s testament.Limited edition of 1,000 pieces.
