Replica of Maria Theresa's thaler standard Maria Theresa’s thalers from Jáchymov silver rank among coins struck from raw-material extracted in a specific place. In wine terminology it could also be called coinage with “controlled designation of origin“ (AOC). The custom to strike such coins came to Bohemia from the Saxonian side of the Giant Mountains. Each such coin bore the name and symbol, or patron, of the specific mine. Maria Theresa’s thalers (1740/42-1780) were struck between 1758 and 1759 in the Prague mint from silver extracted from mines in the town of Jáchymov.Contrary to her father’s thaler that was also made of the Jáchymov silver, the imperial eagle depicted on Maria Theresa’s thalers features only one crowned coat-of-arms divided in two halves - one half with St. Joachim and the other with the Czech lion. Crossed mining hammers are placed below the imperial eagle.
