Brass medal Charles IV standard Charles IV, born in 1316 and named Wenceslas, was the eldest son of John of Luxembourg (also known as John of Bohemia) and Elisabeth Přemyslid. In 1323, afraid of possible dethroning, his father took him to the French court where he was brought up. He chose the name Charles after his godfather, French king Charles IV, at his confirmation. The diplomatic skills and statemanship of the three Luxembourgs: John of Bohemia, his uncle Balduin, archbishop of Trevir, and Charles himself brought the latter to the very top of secular power. Charles was gradually named Margrave of Moravia, King of the Romans, King of Bohemia, King of Lombardy, Holy Roman Emperor, Margrave of Brabant. He added to The Lands of the Czech Crown the Silesian principalities, Upper and Lower Silesia, as well as many feuds in the empire and Brabant. He was the first Czech ruler to mint ducats with his portrait.
