The cycle of silver-plated medals of the Czech Mint The Astronomical Clock represents another sign of the zodiac - Capricorn - and the month of December, to which it belongs. In ancient times, when The Astronomical Clock was created, it was equipped with only the astronomical dial. The calendar plate was added much later. The author of its contemporary form from the 2nd half of the 19th century is the founder of Czech painting Josef Mánes. He painted onto copper plate using oil paint. Following the example of the medieval book illustrations, various paintings are gilded and the ornament, that surrounds them, is inspired by Romanesque style. The larger targets bear a figural paintings, that are allegories of the calendar months. Mánes was an admirer of rural romance, and so he inspired from the study of the Slavic folklore - he mixed the Czech, Slovak and Polish folk costume elements. The painter dedicated smaller targets to the sign of the zodiac, some of which are complemented by Putti, the playful children's characters frequently used in baroque times. One chubby angel also appears on the obverse side of the medal, and is accompanied by the sign of Capricorn. The larger of the two circular compositions on the obverse is then an allegory of the month of December - a woman and man with a dog watching a butcher working at a village pig-sticking. The reverse side of the medal belongs to the person standing in front of the painter's masterpiece and an inscriptions JOSEF MÁNES – STAROMĚSTSKÝ ORLOJ /Old-Town Astronomical Clock/. The artistic layout of this medal, as well as the entire series, is the work of an experienced academic sculptor Daniela Kartáková. You can store the December’s medal, along with eleven other issues from this cycle, in an engaging collectors' album, which is also in the offer of the Czech Mint.
