Brass medal Ferdinand I standard Ferdinand I was younger son of Philip the Handsome and Joanna the Mad, king of the Romans (king of Germany), Holy Roman Emperor, king of Bohemia and Hungary and Archduke of Austria. Bella gerant alii, tu felix Austria nube – Let others wage war, you - happy Austria - marry! The marriage in 1521 of Ferdinand I and Anna, daughter of Vladislav II Jagiellonian of Bohemia and Hungary, was the third of four dynastic marriages which gave rise in three generations to the vast empire of the Habsburgs (the following territories were gradually added to the hereditary Austrian lands: 1477 – Burgundy, 1504 and 1516 – Castile and Aragon, 1526 – Bohemia and Hungary, 1580 – Portugal). Ferdinand I, elected in 1526 king of Bohemia and Hungary, laid foundations of the central European Habsburg monarchy that lasted almost 400 years. In 1529 and 1532 he defended Vienna and thus the entire Western Europe from the Ottoman Empire.
