In 2016 we celebrate the 450th anniversary of the birth of Jan Jessenius. The Czech National Bank has not forgotten one of the most prominent physicians and scientists of our history. They have dedicated a silver commemorative coin to himwith a nominal value of CZK 200 in quality standard. Jan Jessenius was born on December 27, 1566 to the Hungarian yeoman family. He liked wandering and travelled throughout Europe. He studied hard and as a top doctor he very quickly escalated into the highest social circles - even to the imperial court. On the invitation of Tycho Brahe he paid a visit to Prague, which has captivated him. It was right here, where on June 8th, 1600 he performed the first public autopsy in the Czech lands. Later he moved here. It was in the Czech lands where this liberal philosopher, who was involved in the uprising and had a strong resistance against tyranny, met his fate. After the Battle of White Mountain he was as one of the 27 rebellious Czech Lords executed on the Old Town Square. Out of the 44 artistic proposals sent to the competition has the Czech National Bank chosen the work of an experienced educator and a medal maker - an academic sculptor Zbyněk Fojtů. A collage of the reverse side, whose original symbolic solution appealed to the most professional jury, consists of the autopsy of the body and the cover sheet "Anatomiae Pragae" the Treatise on Jessenius Prague autopsy. Another element of the obverse side is a hangman's sword, which ended Jessenius life. The obverse of the coin is dedicated to a sophisticated portrait of the great physician.
